Regional gas price comparison

This page provides a regional price comparison for main (reticulated) natural gas within NZ.

If your gas is bottled, here’s a use this bottled LPG price comparison instead.

The charts show yearly gas cost against gas used.   Each gas supplier has a separate coloured line.  The lowest coloured line represents the cheapest supplier.

Updated 2025 charts

Most retailers have moved to individual address lookup for pricing, which makes pulling together a price comparison much more difficult.

As can be seen from the historical charts (kept below) for almost every region apart from Whanganui through to Taranaki the most expensive and least expensive gas providers don’t really change too much.

Therefore to save some time I have produced Auckland only – however if you are really keen on me doing a chart for your area, get in touch and will pull something together.

2025 updated chart:

Important – Check how many units you are using per year, as this alters which provider is cheapest. This will provide the most accurate comparison result.

For info – That Power Guy used to have gas water heating (only) which for a four person household was around 7,000 units per year (low user). It wouldn’t take much more consumption (large family, gas heating or cooking) to push above the 10,000 units p.a. range.

Up to 10,000 units p.a. – my pick is Genesis Energy – Standard User for piped gas

It’s quite close at the lower consumption levels, but Genesis Energy is consistently cheap for a range of lower consumption levels which gives them an edge in my opinion.

Above 10,000 units p.a. – cheapest is Contact Energy for piped gas.

As consumption increases, Contact’s pricing clearly beats the competition.

==== Historical charts (out of date) ====

I have kept these here for posterity only, they are out of date – but a useful reference for how gas prices can change by area.

  1. Interesting about Energy on line ,because Ihave just switched to Nova for gas on the recommendation of Whats my number.
Energy on line was not given a n mention .Trustpower was the second choice for gas and electricity. However Paua to the people and Nova were tops so that’s where Iwent.

    1. Hi Claire. Do you know what your rates (daily and per unit) from Nova are? I wonder if they are offering ‘special’ rates via What’s My Number than they do otherwise.

I know some of the power companies used to do this (Energy Online in particular) in order to ‘game’ the rating table. I created this page after I was trying to find the cheapest gas provided for home, and the price comparison sites all said something different!

      1. Hi Claire. Quick update, I have checked with Powerswitch and the Nova rates are out of date. They are updating them this week (10 April ’17). Cheers, Nathan

  2. We changed from Nova to Trustpower 21 months ago and there was a significant price difference (saving) until recently, now I’m getting $500-$600 bills per month with less people in the house. The internet with trustpower is terrible, so have started my homework again, can’t wait to change suppliers in October.

  3. Hi Nathan,
I have just been looking at rotorua prices. From what is available from my bill and online.
    The following values were used.
    Genesis: Daily 131.9c unit 9.95c
    Nova Daily 110.635c unit 8.146c
    Energy Online 123c unit 8.12c

This put Nova as the cheapest between 5000 to 20000 units by about $35 dollars on Energy online, with genesis being nearly $300 dollars per year more expensive.
    regards Shaun

  4. I came across your page after googling for average monthly gas consumption in Nz, and boy your monthly gas bill is a fraction of ours!

We just moved to Taranaki a month ago, have just received our first bill with Contact, and the gas charge is $276.25! We use piped gas for our hob and the infinity hot water system. There are two gas heaters installed and a couple of wall outlets where another gas heater can be connected, but we haven’t been using these at all. I chose Contact for their plan that charges only for the gas you use – so it has no fixed daily gas charge. Therefore this $276.25 is for the 1854kw of gas we’ve apparently used just on our showers and the few times I’ve turned on the gas hob to cook some pancakes or fry some bacon.

I’m dying on the inside because… I thought gas was cheaper than electricity. The electricity side of our bill is $93.56, and that’s with using the heatpump.

After seeing your breakdown of your monthly gas and power bill, I’m now wondering if we have a gas leak or something. That $276 for gas alone is more than our entire winter electricity-only power bills at our previous house!
